My first step into exploring my dream of becoming a published/paid writer was answering an ad I'd seen on several occasions to write for Examiner.com. I sent in my application and a sample article, and a short time later I was accepted to be the Billings Early Childhood/Parenting Examiner. Next with Examiner.com was creating the National TV Moms Examiner. It's safe to say that I have just a bit of a TV addiction and I think TV moms are some of the best characters on television, so why not put all those hours of stored up DVR awesomeness to good use?
One thing writing for Examiner.com did for me was it helped me build a portfolio of work that I could use in spreading my wings and exploring other avenues of writing, which led me to...Simply Family Magazine. My first article with them was published in the January 2011 issue, and the rest, as they say, is history. My work can regularly be found in their magazine and earlier this year, they expanded their website and I was fortunate enough to be brought on as a blogger for SFM Online. In the Simply Family family I am known as, Simply Becca. Writing for Examiner.com and Simply Family has shown me the differences that come with writing for different entities. I have found wonderful homes in the land of freelance writing with these two, and I hope that this is only the beginning for me. Simply Family has offered me the opportunity to experience working with an editor and receiving almost instant support if need be, while Examiner.com flows a bit differently. Once your first article is approved, the direction your column takes is pretty much up to you. Obviously you need to stay on-topic and write well, but from there it's where the story takes you.
